Initial costs up, but Alexandria firms like investment in employee health clinic

Costs from employee claims have gone up since Gilchrist Construction Co. and Martin Companies established an outside-the-box model for meeting their employees' health-care needs.

Yet the two companies couldn't be happier.

"We expected our claims costs to go up," said Diane Davidson, employee benefits manager with Martin Companies. "We are uncovering a lot of health issues, and when you do that, your costs go up.
